Its not as fast as the 22 Nosler, mostly because the 22 Nosler has a higher case capacity. In the 224 Valkyrie, though, you will see a lot of heavy, long, high ballistic coefficient bullets loaded to magazine length, because the designers sacrificed a tiny amount of case capacity to allow for a longer bullet within the length required by the AR lower receiver and magazine internal dimensions. 9am-6pm CST Tue-Fri. On the other hand, the .224 Valkyrie has a shorter case length than the .223 Remington and 22 Nosler, which helps explain why the .224 Valkyrie can shoot longer bullets than the other two, but still has the same maximum overall length. At the same time, like the 6.8 Remington SPC, the .224 Valkyrie has a rim diameter of .422. (l.) I think the reason 308 makes sense in a bolt gun is because it has enough case capacity to push .30 cal bullets of a given weight as fast needed for specific applications when you don't need or want the velocity/recoil of a cartridge that could push said bullet faster. The recoil was a moot point in this test, and most hunters wont wear But, like with the .223 Rem. The barrier to entry for 224 Valkyrie has started out low and is only likely to get lower as more ammunition manufacturers jump into the fray. And more often than not people dont ask they just buy and ask "did I do good?". Take for example a 300BLK in a bolt, to me that would only make sense if you were going to shoot it subsonic / suppressed all the time. Yeah, I hear ya, the first deer I got with a bow was Bambi! How boring! and 22 Nosler, the Grendel cannot use the highest BC bullets of its caliber. However, to make the cartridge compatible with long and slender bullets, with ridiculously high ballistic coefficients (BCs), and with standard 6.8 SPC magazines, Federal shortened the 6.8 SPC case, set the shoulder back with a 30-degree taper, and necked it down to accept .224-caliber bullets. WebDeveloped in-house by Federal Premium Ammunition, the .224 Valkyrie is a bottle-necked cartridge holding a rimless 90-grain Sierra MatchKing slug thats been shrunk from 6.8 to Right now, shooting at extreme distance is a rising trend, and that is what the Valkyrie was designed to do well. The 22 Nosler, introduced just last year at SHOT Show, did not seem to be taking the AR world by storm when, less than a year later, news of the 224 Valkyrie broke over the horizon. It offers dramatically improved extended range trajectories over all other AR-15 cartridges with roughly half the recoil of .308-based long range cartridges offering comparable ballistics. Given that we're looking at shooting heavier bullets at lower velocities than the 22 Nosler, which has a stated barrel life of 2000 rounds for target and benchrest use or 4000 rounds for competition, I am strongly inclined to believe that the 224 Valkyrie will have moderately increased barrel life compared to 22 Nosler. If you were, before the 22 Nosler, wishing your 223 Rem rifle was just a little faster, then you are likely very happy with the 22 Nosler concept. No, it's not entirely fair to compare 18" with 20" barrels, but it's not likely that you would see more than a 50fps bump by going to a 20" 22 Nosler barrel. We can see this from their load recommendations. I am therefore a little jaded when news of a brand new cartridge comes over the wire, because it is often little more than an attempt to cook up interest when the sales numbers for the "old" cartridges aren't looking impressive any more. I did, however, ask Sierra about the stability of the new 95gr SMK out of an 18" 1/7 twist barrel, and their ballistic technician said I'd be fine with that combination. Yes, I know I'm talking about the 50 cents per round 75gr FMJ load here, not target-specific bullets, but even $1.10 a round for match grade stuff is cheaper than most match grade 6.5 Creedmoor.
